Outreach Coordinator

The Central Ohio Worker Center (“COWC”) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that educates, empowers, and advocates for and with low-wage and immigrant workers in Central Ohio.

The COWC seeks an experienced Outreach Coordinator to help us build community and worker power in Central Ohio. This position is a one-year, grant funded position that could be extended pending additional grant funding. 

The ideal COWC Outreach Coordinator will be an outgoing and reliable self-starter who can work with a high level of independence. The Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for working with labor partners, community partners, volunteers, legislators and policy experts, media, and the general public. The Outreach Coordinator should demonstrate versatility in engaging with people with different interests and objectives, and experience working with diverse groups of people. Organizing experience and/or experience with labor law and labor organizing, employment law, and/or immigration law is a plus. 

Outreach Coordinator should have a cultural understanding of low-wage and immigrant workers in and around Columbus, Ohio. Bilingual abilities in Spanish or Somali are a skill heavily sought after.

Job Duties: 

  • Serve as a community trainer on topics of wage theft, the wage theft ordinance, and generally, issues affecting low-wage and immigrant workers.
  • Conduct wage theft intakes and oversee the wage theft intakes conducted by COWC volunteers. 
  • Assist with the communications strategy of the Organization. 
  • Lead the development and dissemination efforts for an employees rights handbook. 
  • Assist with the COWC’s three main committees: Worker Justice Committee; Immigrant Justice Committee; and Governance and Development Committee.
  • Report out to the COWC’s Board of Directors at monthly Board meetings.
  • Write and source Letters to the Editor from members and partners
  • Host Workers’ Rights Workshops online and at locations throughout Central Ohio. 
  • Create and facilitate media opportunities for the COWC and to bring attention to issues affecting low-wage and immigrant workers.
  • Facilitate and grow relationships with existing and new community partners. 
  • Oversee fundraising and membership building efforts. 

Expectations: 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with partners at all levels and with a diverse group of members and volunteers.
  • Understanding of the current and future political landscape regarding workers’ rights and immigrants’ rights. 
  • Ability to use telephone, email, zoom, and Microsoft Office.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license from a state in the United States and access to reliable transportation in and around Central Ohio.  
  • Availability for the full year after initial employment. 
  • Ability to bring flexibility, adaptability and creativity to member recruitment, engagement, and development.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have substantial relevant knowledge of workers’ rights and immigrants’ rights, with a focus on low-wage workers. The ideal candidate will have significant technical expertise and experience and will be expected to work with an increased level of independence and initiative. Requires significant participation in securing funding for the organization.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication and interpersonal relationship skills. 

Experience as an organizer, a labor or employment attorney or law assistant, researcher, or in the role of Community Outreach Coordinator.

Details:

  • The Outreach Coordinator reports to the Board President and the Board of Directors.
  • Based in Columbus, Ohio. 
  • Some travel within and out of state.
  • Salary starts at $45,000.

Schedule: 

While hours are flexible in this position, the selected candidate will be required to hold some daytime office hours, attend evening and weekend committee meetings (3 committees, each of which meets approximately once per month), Board of Directors meetings, and additional meetings outside of the 9am-5pm hours as assigned by the Board President. 

Work During COVID-19 Pandemic: 

During normal non-pandemic times, this position requires in-person office hours for at least ½ of the hours worked. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the COWC’s committees, Board, and volunteers are currently meeting virtually. While there will be work assigned to the Outreach Coordinator that requires in-person activity (such as delivering flyers and/or assisting members), that work will be limited and will be subject to approval by the Board President so long as the committees and Board remain virtual.
